From the Petro Canada gas station (Redstone Gas Bar), continue westward along Highway 20 for approximately 8-9 KMs. You will have reached Chilanko Forks, BC. Turn to head north on Puntzi Airport Road and proceed for 0.7 KMs at which point, the property will be on the east side of the road. There is a sign marking the property.

The Chilcotin region initially drew settlers into the area looking to graze cattle. This becomes evident as you travel past lush fields, pasture and long segments of “Chilcotin fences.” The expansive Chilcotin lies between the Fraser River and Coast Mountains. This unique region sits on a 5,000 square kilometre plateau much of which is used as rangeland. There are thousands of cattle which roam unfenced across the plateau. Here cowboys ride the range to tend their cattle, roping and branding the calves in the spring, keeping them from straying in summer, and rounding them up in the fall.
The jagged mountain peaks of the Chilcotin are covered in vast ice fields and wide alpine meadows, gradually softening into large valleys, gently rolling foothills, pine covered forests, lakes and rivers and the grasslands of the Chilcotin Plateau.
This is essentially backcountry at its best complete with some of the best fishing lakes and rivers to be found in North America. Chilanko Forks is an unincorporated settlement as well as a First Nations community of the Tsilhqot’in people, located on the north bank of the Chilanko River just northeast of Tatla Lake, and immediately south of Puntzi Lake, in the Chilcotin District of the Central Interior of British Columbia. Chilanko Forks is the location of the offices of the Alexis Creek First Nation.
Puntzi Lake is 3 miles wide and 7 miles long with a surface area of 4,215 acres. It is at 3,133 ft above sea level and has a gently sloping bottom from 0 to 140 ft at its deepest point. The lake freezes over by mid-December which provides opportunities for cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. Ice off is by mid to late April to allow for fishing and water sports.
Alexis Creek is a small community of approximately 300 people in the Chilcotin Grasslands region of British Columbia. The region of rolling hills is surrounded by lakes and farmlands, some reaching far into the backcountry—all connected by an extensive network of gravel roads. This area is known for cattle ranching, hunting and the frontier lifestyle. The small community is one of the many service centres located along scenic Highway 20.

14 km east of Alexis Creek on the Anaham First Nations land, there is a gas station, band office and general store.
Outdoor recreation and activities are endless in the Chilcotin. You can enjoy fishing the rivers or lakes for Dolly Varden and trout or come and view one of the largest annual runs of sockeye salmon in British Columbia. Every year, from mid-August to mid-October, hundreds of thousands of salmon return to their spawning grounds. During this time, you can always enjoy viewing the massive grizzly bears and their families as they come out to feast on the spawning salmon.
You can also experience the Chilcotin on horseback, the way it was meant to be seen. There are endless areas to trail ride and explore.
River kayaking, rafting, windsurfing in the clean waters of Chilko lake, the highest altitude lake in North America are also very popular recreation activities on the lake.
Hiking, biking, snowshoeing, x-country skiing, snowmachining, quading or canoeing are also great recreational activities in this area.
The first people to live in Tatla Lake/Chilanko Forks area were the Tsilhqot’in (Chilcotin) First Nations people. Ranching began in 1890 with the influx of early pioneers. A post office was established on the Graham Ranch in 1914 with Mrs. Graham as postmistress for mail that only came once a month at first. Over the years a school, community hall, and nursing station were added.
